CHAPTER FOURTEEN

“What did I do to upset your grandfather?” Kyle asked as they walked out of the hospital.

“You didn’t do anything,” Grace reassured him. “Grandpa found out that your family hired a private detective to investigate me.”

“What?” Kyle asked in an outraged tone of voice.

“It’s okay,” she said quickly. “I understand. They were just trying to protect you. I’m not upset at all.”

“Well, I am. I am a private detective and they hire a competitor.”

“Well, they probably thought you might be a bit biased.”

“I am a complete professional.” He opened the passenger door and helped her inside before walking to the driver’s side. “I can’t believe they would do something like that. I can see my father doing it, but not them. Oh, and speaking of private detectives, I went up to Steve’s room…”

Grace paused in the act of buckling up. “Wait! Steve’s still in the hospital?”

“Yeah. Remember all those bees stung him yesterday. He said—”

“I remember, but I thought he had been released. Why didn’t someone tell me?”

“Beth swore us to secrecy. She didn’t want you to worry about anything on your big day.” He smiled affectionately as he lifted her hand and brushed a kiss along the back of her knuckles. “We all wanted today to be as stress free as possible for you.”

“Oh, that’s so sweet. It didn’t work, but still the thought was nice.” She connected the seatbelt and glanced out the window. “Is Steve going to be alright?”

“He’s fine. Most of the swelling is gone now and they’re going to release him in an hour. I told him I’d come and pick him up. Anyway,” he said, stressing the word, “I’ve got news about Carl O’Hare. You’re never going to believe this. Carl O’Hare—”

“Is a private detective,” she finished for him.

Kyle looked at her in surprise as he pulled out of the parking lot. “How did you find that out?”

Anticipating his reaction, Grace cringed. “Grandpa hired him to investigate you and your family in retaliation for investigating me and mine.”

Kyle looked at her in disbelief. Blowing out his breath, he said, “Well, apparently everyone but me is getting work lately.”

She patted his leg. “Try not to take it personally. You’re a wonderful detective.”

He dropped his hand on top of hers and squeezed. “Thank you. So are you.” Stopping at a red light, he leaned over and kissed her. “Figure out who killed Martin Grisby yet?”

She pressed her lips together, reluctant to tell him that she had no intention of figuring out who killed Martin Grisby. There was just so much she had to do today. She had to get her hair and makeup done, put on her dress, take her wedding photos, meet and greet her guests, many of whom traveled many miles to see them get married... Her muscles tensed as a wave of panic swept through her. Not to mention, she was pretty sure that Beth had said something about a massage. A massage would definitely come in handy right about now, she thought, as she rubbed her neck.
